Sunday is the 38th anniversary of the ouster of the late Philippine dictator President Ferdinand Marcos in a pro-democracy uprising. The People Power movement toppled the dictatorship on February 25, 1986. The day was later made a national holiday. But Marcos' son, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., dropped the holiday this year in a presidential proclamation. Civic groups held a rally in Manila on Sunday. Participants criticized the decision to drop the holiday, calling it an attempt to revise history. Videos of the pro-democracy movement were shown, and victims of the dictatorship were mourned. A 17-year-old high school student said she came to the rally with her mother because her school does not teach the history of the pro-democracy movement in detail. An 18-year-old high school student said he is sad that the government seems to be trying to revise and destroy history. He added that young people should not forget the atrocities committed in the past and how people won the freedom they now enjoy.
