Japan's daily COVID deaths hit record at 456 NHK

Japan's health ministry says it confirmed 456 deaths from coronavirus infections on Friday, the highest single-day toll in the country since the pandemic began.

Nationwide, 245,542 new cases were confirmed on Friday.

The ministry also says 20,720 new cases were confirmed in Tokyo on Friday. The daily tally is up 6,195 from a week ago.

Ministry officials reported 29 deaths in the capital.
