Ukraine reports injuries, damage from Russian drone, missile attacks NHK

Russia launched a series of drone and missile strikes on Ukraine on Monday. It comes ahead of Moscow's Victory Day celebrations marking the anniversary of Nazi Germany's defeat in 1945.

Ukrainian officials said 16 Russian missile strikes targeted the cities of Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odesa. They reported more than 60 airstrikes and 50 shelling attacks on their troops and settlements.

Officials said at least five people were wounded in the capital. A fuel depot, buildings and infrastructure were damaged.

Kyiv said defense systems destroyed all 35 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched by Russia.

In the east, Moscow has stepped up shelling of the battleground city of Bakhmut. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of Russian private military firm Wagner Group, recently threatened to pull his forces from there, citing shortages of ammunition. But he appears to have changed course, saying his group has been promised more ammo.

The Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, said he and the leader of Chechen forces may have compelled Moscow to provide more ammunition.

It also said that problems with the chain of command are having a significant impact on Russia's ability to conduct coherent operations.
