ASEAN foreign chiefs have discussed how to bring peace to Myanmar. At their talks in Bangkok, they agreed to keep prodding the junta to implement the bloc's peace plan. Myanmar's military-appointed foreign minister did not take part in Friday's meeting. ASEAN and the junta signed off on the peace plan, called the Five-Point Consensus, shortly after the military coup in 2021. It stipulates an immediate end to the violence. But there's no sign of the generals putting it into action. Thai officials said ASEAN member countries reaffirmed the need to enforce the agreement and promote dialogue with Myanmar toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The UN says more than 5,000 Myanmar civilians had been killed in military crackdowns and airstrikes as of June this year. At Friday's talks, Singapore's foreign minister voiced "grave concern" over the escalating violence and disappointment with the "limited progress" made in realizing the peace plan.
