Russian forces have launched missile attacks on parts of southern Ukraine, following explosions that damaged a bridge linking the Crimea region and Russia on Monday.
Ukrainian forces announced that Russia attacked the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions in southern Ukraine with cruise missiles and drones from Monday night through early Tuesday morning. Ukrainians said they destroyed six missiles and 32 drones.
Odesa's governor said in a social media post that the attacks damaged infrastructure facilities and private houses there, injuring one resident.
But Russia's defense ministry said on Tuesday that it had successfully conducted a mass retaliatory strike against facilities preparing to carry out terrorist attacks on Russia.
Before the latest missile strikes, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to retaliate for the attack on the bridge used by Russian troops to ferry supplies into Crimea and beyond, calling it a terrorist act by Ukraine. He reportedly said, "Of course, there will be a response from the Russian side."
The US think tank Institute for the Study of War said in its assessment on Monday that the bridge attack "will likely have continuing ramifications on Russian logistics in southern Ukraine."
