Police in northeastern Japan say two people have been rescued from the site of a landslide that engulfed structures, including houses. The disaster occurred in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. Police say they received a report of a collapsed slope at around 1 a.m. on Saturday. Police say a man in his 70s and a woman in her 60s have been rescued so far. Rescuers are searching for others who may be buried. A man who went to the site before 2 a.m. told NHK that multiple buildings in a residential area had been hit. He said an occupied house appeared to have been inundated with debris. The man said many firefighters and police officers were on the scene conducting rescue operations. He also said some residents have taken shelter in a community center near the site after being instructed to evacuate. He voiced his surprise, adding that he is concerned about the safety of other residents as the district had never before experienced a landslide.
