NATO says its Secretary General Mark Rutte has met US President-elect Donald Trump and discussed a range of global security issues facing the alliance. Trump and Rutte reportedly met on Friday in Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump has his home. They are believed to have discussed issues including the situation in Ukraine. The meeting drew attention, as Trump has repeatedly complained that many NATO allies rely on the United States for defense, and declared that he will review the alliance. He is expected to demand that other members increase spending. Meanwhile, the Reuters news agency reported on Friday that Trump is considering the creation of a special envoy post to bring an end to fighting in Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The report says Trump may tap his aide Richard Grenell for the position. Grenell worked for the former Trump administration as the ambassador to Germany and the acting director of national intelligence. He accompanied Trump at his talks with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York in September. If appointed as the special envoy, Grenell is expected to play a key role in negotiations for a ceasefire.
