Voters in Indonesia are set to cast their ballots on Wednesday to choose a successor to incumbent President Joko Widodo.

Indonesia holds a presidential election once every five years. Three candidates are running in this year's race. They are Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo.

The focus of the election is whether to continue Joko's policies or seek reform as he is barred from serving a third term under the country's Constitution.

Prabowo describes himself as Joko's successor and pledges to continue the president's policies. Ganjar also says he will maintain Joko's main policies, such as the planned relocation of the country's capital.

Meanwhile, Anies is drumming up support from those critical of the current administration. He pledges to partially review the capital relocation plan and correct the country's economic disparity.

The latest poll shows Prabowo is well ahead of the other two candidates with a support rate of more than 50 percent.

If none of the candidates secures a majority, a run-off will be held between the top two contenders in June.

This election is called the world's largest direct vote to choose a state leader, with over 200 million eligible voters.

Voting starts as early as 5 a.m. on Wednesday, and ballot-counting will begin later in the day.
