The BBC says its reporter who was covering the protest against COVID-19 restrictions in Shanghai was arrested and detained by Chinese authorities. The British public broadcaster said on Sunday that journalist Ed Lawrence was held for several hours before being released. The BBC said that he was "beaten and kicked during his arrest," and expressed serious concern over his treatment. It added that the Chinese authorities had given no credible explanation or apology for his detention. Shanghai is one of a number of Chinese cities where protests have erupted against the government's "zero-COVID" policy. It is extremely rare for protests against the government to take place simultaneously in multiple cities in the country, as Chinese authorities maintain stringent controls on freedom of speech under one-party rule by the Communist Party. The Chinese government says it confirmed around 39,000 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, a fifth straight daily record.
