Parts of Niigata Prefecture and southern Tohoku have had snowfall measuring three times the seasonal average, following record-level blizzards along the Sea of Japan on Sunday and Monday. Weather officials forecast more rough weather and heavy snow from Thursday through Sunday. The Japan Meteorological Agency says a strong winter-type pressure pattern brought heavy snow to Hokuriku, Niigata Prefecture and Tohoku from Sunday to Monday. As of 5 p.m. on Tuesday, snow was 2.16 meters deep in the village of Ohkura in Yamagata Prefecture; 1.83 meters in Uonuma City, Niigata; and 1.79 meters in Sukayu in the Hakkoda mountain range in Aomori Prefecture. Forecasters are warning residents to be on alert for traffic disruptions due to snow and ice even though the peak of the rough weather is over. They are also warning of avalanches through Wednesday, as warmer and rainy conditions are expected. Daytime highs in Tohoku and Hokuriku are expected to be six to eight degrees Celsius higher than on Tuesday. Weather officials say people should not approach places where avalanches are likely, including mountains with heavy snowfall, steep slopes with few tall trees, and cracks in accumulated snow. They say that from Thursday through Sunday, the winter-type pressure pattern will become strong again, and a powerful cold air mass will flow in. This is likely to bring more rough weather and heavy snow to the Sea of Japan side of northern to western Japan. The officials are advising people to stay updated on the latest weather information.
