A US Congressional committee has issued a subpoena to former President Donald Trump in connection with last year's attack on the Capitol by his supporters. The House of Representatives panel investigating the deadly riot on January 6, 2021 said on Friday that it had subpoenaed Trump to demand his testimony. The panel says it has assembled overwhelming evidence that the former president personally orchestrated and oversaw a multi-part effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election and to obstruct the peaceful transition of power. The subpoena demands that relevant documentary material be submitted to the panel by November 4, and that Trump appear for a deposition beginning on or around November 14. If Trump does not comply, he could be held in contempt of Congress. Congress would vote on whether to refer Trump to the Justice Department, which has the authority to decide whether to bring criminal charges. Trump's former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, defied a subpoena from the January 6 committee. He was sentenced on Friday to serve four months in prison and fined 6,500 dollars after being found guilty of contempt of Congress.
