Weather officials say they have observed a severe tropical storm over waters far south of Japan, warning that it may develop and approach the southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa. The Japan Meteorological Agency says Severe Tropical Storm Bebinca was observed near the Mariana Islands at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Japan Time. Bebinca had a central atmospheric pressure of 990 hectopascals as of 9 a.m. on Wednesday. It was packing sustained winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts of up to 126 kilometers per hour. Weather officials say Bebinca is expected to move northwest while developing and could approach Okinawa on Saturday or later. The storm's future course has not yet been precisely determined. The agency is calling on people to pay attention to the latest weather information.
