Blinken: China seeking to speed up reunification with Taiwan NHK

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed wariness about China's third-term leadership under President Xi Jinping, warning that China is seeking to speed up reunification with Taiwan.

Blinken said in an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday that Beijing has decided that the status quo is no longer acceptable.

He said the Chinese government has also made decisions about how it would speed up the process of pursuing reunification, including exerting more pressure on Taiwan, coercion and making people's lives there difficult in a variety of ways.

He added that China is also holding out the possibility of using force to achieve its goals.

The United States sees China as its biggest competitor. Blinken described the competition as one "to shape what the world looks like going forward."

He said that the US is not trying to contain or restrain China, but is resolute in standing up for its interests and values.

Blinken said, "China wants a world order, but theirs would be an illiberal one. We want a world order, but ours would be inspired by liberal values."
