Hoshoryu performs first ring-entering ceremony as yokozuna NHK

About 3,500 people gathered at Meiji Jingu shrine in Tokyo on Friday to see sumo yokozuna grand champion Hoshoryu perform his first ring-entering ceremony. He was promoted to the sport's highest rank this week.

The 25 year-old who was born in Mongolia wore a brand-new white rope around his waist, a symbol of grand champions. His uncle and former yokozuna grand champion Asashoryu was among those in the crowd.

Hoshoryu performed in the unryu-style, which is said to represent sumo offense and defense.

Hoshoryu said: "I was nervous. I want to do my best as yokozuna."
