In Pakistan, protestors have rallied against the government's plan to deport people it says are in the country illegally. Islamabad is urging all undocumented immigrants, including some 1.7 million Afghans, to leave the country voluntarily by November 1 or face deportation. In the southwestern border town of Chaman, scores of Afghans together with local residents marched in the streets on Thursday. They chanted slogans such as 'new deportation policy is unacceptable'. The caretaker interior minister said on the same day any illegal immigrants found after the deadline would be taken to holding centers before being deported. The government has linked the measures to allegations that Afghan nationals are behind an increasing number of suicide bombings in the country. Last month alone, the Pakistani Taliban claimed to have carried out more than one hundred attacks inside Pakistan. Islamabad says the attackers are based in Afghanistan but the Afghan Taliban denies any involvement. The announcement has prompted fears among hundreds of thousands of people who fled Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power in August 2021. The United Nations has called on Islamabad to refrain from following through with the deportations out of concern over human rights violations if they are forced to return.
