Israel vows response to deadly soccer field strike it blames on Hezbollah NHK

Israel has vowed to respond to a deadly strike on a soccer field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The country says that Lebanon-based Hezbollah is responsible, but the Shia Muslim group denies involvement.

An Israeli military spokesperson said on Saturday that a Hezbollah rocket attack killed 10 people including children playing soccer earlier in the day. More than 20 others were said to have been injured.

The Israeli prime minister's office quoted Benjamin Netanyahu as saying, "Israel will not overlook this murderous attack," and that "Hezbollah will pay a heavy price."

Hezbollah said in a statement that the group "has absolutely nothing to do with the incident and denies all false allegations in this regard."

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah are rising as they have recently been trading fire while Israel continues fighting with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Hezbollah has shown solidarity with Hamas.

The White House National Security Council condemned the attack in a statement on Saturday. It said, "Israel continues to face severe threats to its security," and "the United States will continue to support efforts to end these terrible attacks." It added, "Our support for Israel's security is iron-clad and unwavering against all Iranian-backed terrorist groups, including Lebanese Hezbollah."
