US media have reported Japan's victory in the World Baseball Classic, focusing on two-way star Ohtani Shohei's role in the team's 3-2 triumph over the United States in the final game.

The New York Times said, "despite a lineup filled with All-Stars and past winners of the Most Valuable Player Award, the US mustered little against Japan."

The paper described Ohtani as "arguably the game's best player."

Fox News reported that "Japan baseball rules the world once again." It said, "the game was a classic all night, and ended in such a storybook way."

Ohtani took the mound in the 9th. He struck out his Los Angeles Angels teammate Mike Trout, a three-time American League MVP, to end the game.

Fox said the entire baseball world had been waiting for the matchup.

US broadcaster CBS Sports tweeted that "Ohtani is not human," with a photo of him and a list of his achievements -- 2018 AL Rookie of the Year, 2021 AL MVP and 2023 World Baseball Classic champion.
