Japanese police sources say a suspected fugitive believed to have been involved in a bombing attack in Tokyo in the 1970s told them that he received no help while on the run.

The man, who claimed to be Kirishima Satoshi, died at a hospital in Kanagawa Prefecture on Monday.

Kirishima was a member of the leftist extremist group East Asia Anti-Japan Armed Front, which is allegedly responsible for a series of bombing attacks targeting businesses in 1974 and 1975.

Kirishima was on a nationwide wanted list for his suspected involvement in one of the attacks.

On Thursday, the man who identified himself as Kirishima was found to be hospitalized.

The person is believed to have lived under the name Uchida Hiroshi for about 40 years.

Police sources say the man told investigators that he was alone without supporters while on the run.

He did not have a cell phone nor any identification documents.

Asked about the bombing attacks, he reportedly told investigators that he regrets them.

Police have not found any records showing Kirishima went abroad.

They are trying to identify the person through DNA analysis. If he is identified as Kirishima, police will investigate if he had received any help and how he lived as a fugitive.
