India is just one week away from kicking off what is being called the world's biggest general election, with nearly one billion eligible voters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party is taking on an opposition alliance. Key issues in the election include economic disparity and youth employment. Modi led the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, to victory in the previous general election in 2019. Now he is hoping to win a third term based on his national popularity and role in robust economic growth. But the Indian National Congress party and others in the opposition camp say Modi's administration has allowed the wealth gap to grow, while not creating enough jobs for young people. The opposition camp last month organized a protest of the arrest of Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with a corruption case. Kejriwal is an outspoken critic of Modi. The opposition says the prime minister is suppressing political opponents ahead of the election, which the BJP denies. Voting starts April 19. There will be seven phases of voting over 6 weeks, with the results to be announced June 4.
