A United Nations humanitarian agency says nearly 340,000 people have been displaced in the Gaza Strip as Israel continues its reprisal strikes against the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, said on Wednesday that the number of people displaced across Gaza had increased by about 75,000 to 338,934 in a 24-hour period. The OCHA said that nearly 220,000 people are sheltering in schools established by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA. It noted that more than 50 percent of the shops in Gaza have dwindling stocks of essentials, such as wheat flour, dairy products, vegetables and mineral water. The agency said this "dire situation" underscores the "severe and multifaceted humanitarian impact of the ongoing crisis." The UN office added that movement restrictions and shortages of electricity, fuel, water and other essential materials have constrained the efforts to provide humanitarian assistance.
