Shares fell in Tokyo trading on Thursday, following a broad sell-off on Wall Street. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's comments on fighting inflation after the US central bank's policy decision on Wednesday disappointed investors in New York who had been hoping the Fed would announce an end to rate hikes. The benchmark index Nikkei 225 briefly fell more than 200 points within half an hour of the start of trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than 500 points, or 1.6 percent on Wednesday. The tech-heavy Nasdaq also slid, ending the day 1.6 percent lower. Analysts say that many investors believe that monetary tightening will continue. They also say that concern over the health of the banking system remains high, and that many investors think an economic downturn is likely.
