Investigative authorities in Germany suspect Friday's deadly car attack on a Christmas market in the country's east was a deliberate act. Five people were killed and more than 200 others injured in the city of Magdeburg after a driver rammed his vehicle into a crowded Christmas market on Friday night. Police detained a 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia at the scene. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the suspect came to Germany in 2006 and worked as a doctor. She also said he held anti-Islamic views. Investigators suggested the background to the crime could have been disgruntlement with the way Saudi Arabian refugees are treated in Germany. German media cited an investigative source as saying the suspect stayed at a hotel near the Christmas market in Magdeburg multiple times in November and December. Areas around the Christmas market were closed to traffic with blocks. But the suspect used an access lane for emergency vehicles to drive into the site. Investigators suspect the attack may have been premeditated, and are looking into the motive.
