JAL veteran shares lessons from 1985 crash with new airline staff NHK

A veteran Japan Airlines employee spoke to young workers about lessons learned from the firm's deadliest plane crash ahead of the 40th anniversary of the tragedy.



A Japan Airlines jumbo jet flying from Tokyo to Osaka crashed into the Osutaka Ridge in Gunma Prefecture on August 12, 1985. The accident left 520 passengers and crew dead.



Now, only a handful of employees have firsthand knowledge of the accident, and how to pass on memories of the crash is becoming a pressing matter for the airline.



Miura Takehiko, now 64, was in his early days at JAL when the plane went down. He spoke to young workers about it at an Osaka Airport facility on Tuesday.



Miura said that at the time he was involved in taking care of bereaved families and handing over the remains of the victims to their families at Osaka Airport.



Looking back, he said he felt so sorry about what happened that he wanted to block the crash out of his mind.



But Miura said he gradually began to face the accident after climbing to the crash site to console the spirit of the victims, and visiting the facility where their belongings were preserved.



He said he began to feel that he had a responsibility to pass on lessons learned from the crash.



Miura said it is important to keep learning from the accident as it provides various lessons. He said he hopes his story will give opportunities for young workers to think about what they can do to improve safety.
