In the Central Asian country of Uzbekistan, incumbent President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is expected to be re-elected in the presidential election held on Sunday. The country's Central Election Commission said on Monday that preliminary results show Mirziyoyev won more than 87 percent of the votes in Sunday's election. In May, a set of amendments that included allowing a president to serve a seven-year term for two consecutive times was approved by majority vote in the referendum. With the result, President Mirziyoyev will be able to stay in office until 2037. The president is believed to be aiming to continue his economic reforms and stabilize his administration. Human rights groups pointed out that some opposition parties were prevented from running in the election. Critics say that it is a move to strengthen Mirziyoyev's grip on power.
