The heaviest rainfall in decades in southern China has forced about 110,000 people to evacuate. In Guangdong Province, extensive flooding and several landslides occurred in Qingyuan, Shaoguan and elsewhere. The state-run Xinhua news agency says four people have died, 10 others are missing and some 110,000 have been relocated due to the deluge. State-run China Central Television showed footage of flooded urban areas, with homes inundated with water over the height of a person and people being evacuated on boats. Chinese media quoted weather authorities as saying South China has had the second-highest amount of rain for April since 1961. The authorities reportedly said global warming is partly responsible for the torrential rain. Officials are calling on residents to remain on the alert because the heavy rain may continue for several more days.
