Three films created by Japanese directors have received nominations for this year's Oscars. They include a documentary directed by Ito Shiori, a journalist who has become a symbol of Japan's "Me Too" movement.

The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards were unveiled on Thursday. The announcement was postponed twice due to ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles County and nearby areas.

Ito's "Black Box Diaries" was shortlisted in the documentary feature film category. It dissects Japan's judicial system through court cases in which she accused a man of sexual assault.

"Instruments of a Beating Heart," directed by Yamazaki Ema, collected a nomination in the documentary short film division.

The work follows students and teachers at a Japanese public elementary school. Yamazaki says she made the film as she thought her spirit of mutual help might have originated in her experience as a pupil at a Japanese elementary school.

"Magic Candies," directed by Nishio Daisuke, earned a nomination in the animated short film section.

The full computer graphics movie is based on the picture book of the same title by South Korean author Baek Hee-na. It centers on a boy who is not good at expressing his feelings.

The awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on March 2.
