Taliban hold third public execution in recent days NHK

In Afghanistan, the Taliban have held another public execution of a man convicted of murder. It was the third such death sentence carried out in recent days.

The execution on Monday took place at a sports stadium in the northern province of Jowzjan. The Taliban said three courts had ruled that the condemned man should face punishment equivalent to the damage he inflicted, based on Islamic law.

Last Thursday, a double public execution was carried out in southeastern Ghazni province. The Taliban said two individuals were sentenced to die in retribution for their crimes.

Since retaking power in 2021, the Taliban have been governing in line with their strict interpretation of Islamic law. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has condemned the state executions, saying they are inconsistent with the fundamental right to life.
