- The US is withdrawing from 66 international organizations and treaties under President Trump’s direction.
- A UN climate change official warned the US withdrawal could negatively impact the American economy and living standards.

A: Hey Hana, did you hear anything crazy in the news today?

B: Hi Kenji! Not really. What’s up?

A: Apparently, President Trump wants the US to leave a bunch of international groups. Like, sixty-six!

B: Wow! Seriously? Why?

A: Apparently, they haven't been paying what they owe to the UN. It’s like, a big legal thing! They need to pay a lot – twenty-two percent of the budget!

B: That’s a huge chunk! Is it just for regular stuff or peacekeeping too?

A: Yep, everything! The UN boss, Antonio Guterres, is a little worried about it. He said they *have* to pay.

B: So, is it just the UN then?

A: No, also a big climate change agreement.  The head of that is not happy either. He thinks it’ll make things worse for the US, like more floods and storms.

B: Oh no! That doesn’t sound good. Is there any hope they’ll change their mind?

A:  He said the door is open for them to come back later. Fingers crossed, right?

A: It’s all pretty wild, huh?

B: Definitely! Let’s hope things work out.
