A Japan-led global conference on African development will open in Yokohama, near Tokyo, on Wednesday. Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, African leaders and other representatives will attend the three-day Tokyo International Conference on African Development, or TICAD. Ishiba said on Tuesday that he would like to discuss how to make use of Africa's human and physical resources for Japan's growth and global prosperity in a way that benefits both Japan and African countries. At the conference, Ishiba plans to propose an initiative to build an economic zone that stretches from India through the Middle East to the African continent. He is also expected to put forth a plan to train 30,000 people in the field of artificial intelligence over the next three years in cooperation with the University of Tokyo's graduate school, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and African universities. Participants in the conference will hold discussions on the themes of peace and stability, as well as economic and social issues. On the last day, they will adopt what will be called the "Yokohama declaration," in which meeting outcomes will be compiled. Ishiba is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with the leaders of more than 30 countries, keeping in mind that countries such as China and Russia are also strengthening their ties with African countries. He aims to reinforce ties between Japan and African states by offering them transparent development projects. ---------------- Quiz 1: Who is hosting the global conference on African development in August 2025?
