A low-pressure system is expected to bring rough weather including strong winds, rain and snow in eastern and northern Japan on Wednesday. The Meteorological Agency says a low pressure system is moving westward on the Sea of Japan, causing strong winds in western Japan on Tuesday. The agency said maximum gust speed reached about 100 kilometers per hour in Tanegashima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Weather officials also say snow is becoming strong mainly in the mountainous areas of Kyushu, Chugoku and Shikoku due to the effects of a cold air mass. The officials expect another low pressure system will likely appear near the Kii Peninsula, western Japan, later in the day, and move eastward. They forecast rain and snow accompanied by strong winds are possible in western Japan from now through Wednesday, and in eastern and northern Japan on Wednesday. Strong winds of up to about 83 kilometers per hour are expected in the Chugoku, Kanto and Tohoku regions, and up to about 72 kilometers per hour in northern Kyushu on Wednesday. The agency forecasts heavy snow mainly in mountainous areas of the Chugoku, Kanto-Koshin and the Tohoku regions. In the 24 hours through late afternoon on Wednesday, snowfall of up to 40 centimeters is expected in the Chugoku and Kanto-Koshin regions, 30 centimeters in the Tohoku region, and 20 centimeters in Shikoku. The agency is calling on people to be on alert for traffic disruptions due to strong winds and heavy snow. On Tuesday, vehicles are becoming stuck on some roads in the mountains in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, due to snow. Prefectural officials said vehicles are at standstill on National Route 212 and Prefectural Route 339. They both lead to the scenic Daikanbo lookout. Police said they have received reports that about 30 cars are stuck on Route 339.
