The United States says military cooperation between North Korea and Russia is making Pyongyang "more capable of waging war against its neighbors."

The deputy US ambassador to the United Nations, Dorothy Camille Shea, voiced the alert at an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday.

The meeting was convened following North Korea's missile launch on Monday. The country said it successfully test-fired a new type of intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile.

Shea said North Korea is significantly benefiting from receiving Russian military equipment, technology and experience, rendering it more capable of waging war against its neighbors.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia rejected the US allegation that Moscow plans to share advanced space and satellite technology with the North. Nebenzia said the claim made by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday is wholly unsubstantiated.

Referring to the missile launch, Nebenzia said the North's leadership has a full right to implement measures to ensure their security and to uphold the country's sovereignty.

Japan's UN Ambassador Yamazaki Kazuyuki condemned the launch, saying it is fundamentally related to global nonproliferation. He called on the council to take action in response.

North Korea's UN Ambassador Kim Song justified the launch. He said the hypersonic ballistic missile is part of a plan to develop national defense capability in conformity with the region's changing security environments.

China's deputy UN ambassador, Geng Shuang, said his country has always conscientiously implemented all North Korea-related resolutions and fulfilled its due international obligations.

Geng also said the US has substantially increased its military presence on the Korean Peninsula and the neighborhood, gravely undermining the strategic interests of regional countries, including China.
