People in Yamagata Prefecture, northern Japan, are struggling to clean up after record-breaking rainfall two weeks ago. On Thursday, local high school students helped to clean up a hotel hit by a landslide. Heavy rains in Yamagata on July 25 led to rivers overflowing banks, flooding nearby areas. The rains left three people dead in the prefecture. A hot-spa hotel in the town of Mogami saw muddy water rush into its open-air bath and other facilities. On Thursday, the hotel was visited by a group of 12 high school students from the neighboring town of Obanazawa. They removed dried mud from a pond with shovels, and washed it clean with brushes. The president of the hotel, Takahashi Yu, said he is really grateful that the high school students came to help out. He said he hopes to reopen the hotel in November and everyone is working hard to make this possible.
