LDP lawmaker to agree to summary indictment over unreported funds NHK

NHK has learned that Tokyo prosecutors are considering issuing a summary indictment against a lawmaker of the main governing Liberal Democratic Party over an alleged failure to report political funds. The lawmaker intends to agree to the procedure.

Political groups related to Lower House member Sonoura Kentaro allegedly failed to list in a political funds report a total of 40 million yen, or about 300,000 dollars, in revenues from fund-raising parties.

Prosecutors believe Sonoura conspired with his secretary to underreport revenues, in violation of the political funds control law.

Sources say his government-paid secretary, who was in charge of accounting for the groups, admitted to failing to report the revenues during a voluntary hearing with prosecutors. Sonoura reportedly explained to prosecutors that he was told in advance by his secretary about not listing the income in the report.

A summary indictment requires that the person indicted be notified by prosecutors and agree to the procedure.

If the payment of a fine is finalized, Sonoura's civil rights will be suspended for five years in principle. He would also lose his seat in the Diet.

Sonoura is expected to decide shortly on whether to resign from the Diet.

He is said to have submitted to the LDP an undated letter about leaving the party.
