US House set to vote on additional Ukraine aid on Saturday NHK

The Republican leader of the US House of Representatives says the chamber is expected to vote on Saturday on a stalled measure to provide new defense assistance to Ukraine.

The House on Wednesday unveiled a package that involves separate spending bills on aid to Ukraine, Israel and other US allies.

Republican Speaker Mike Johnson announced the voting plan amid threats to oust him by some hardline members of his party who strongly oppose aid for Ukraine.

The Ukraine bill would provide roughly 60 billion dollars. It requires some of the assistance to be repaid.

Aid for Israel totals around 26 billion dollars. There have been growing calls in the House to swiftly provide support for Israel following Iran's massive drone and missile attack.

About 8 billion dollars will be appropriated for the Indo-Pacific region, including Taiwan.

US President Joe Biden released a statement expressing his strong support for the aid package. He urged the House and Senate to ensure its quick passage.
