US President Joe Biden on Monday signed into law a defense policy bill, apparently aimed at countering China. The fiscal 2025 National Defense Authorization Act sets the defense budget at over 895 billion dollars, up 1 percent from the previous fiscal year. It authorizes 15.5 billion dollars for the Pacific Deterrence Initiative, and provides 300 million dollars to enable Taiwan to maintain sufficient self-defense capabilities, amid China's increasing military presence in the region. The Act requires the government to submit to congressional committees a plan to reconstitute US forces in Japan as a joint force headquarters. It also requires that an assessment be made of the potential for cooperation with Japan in the field of advanced technologies in the AUKUS security framework, which consists of the United States, Britain and Australia.
