Survivors, dignitaries mark 80th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation NHK

Holocaust survivors and world dignitaries will attend a ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz in Poland.

Participants at Monday's ceremony will include survivors of the camp, their families and representatives from about 50 countries.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, French President Emmanuel Macron and King Charles of the United Kingdom are among the dignitaries.

Ahead of the ceremony, a commemorative event was held in front of the Death Wall, where prisoners were fatally shot.

Eighty years after Auschwitz's liberation, the average age of Holocaust survivors has reached 86.

The museum that manages the site says the milestone ceremony is likely to be the last attended by survivors.
