Miyazaki Hayao and Shinkai Makoto films nominated for Golden Globes NHK

Animated films by Japanese directors Miyazaki Hayao and Shinkai Makoto have been nominated for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards in the United States.

The full list of nominees was announced in Los Angeles on Monday.

"The Boy and the Heron" is in contention for Best Animated Motion Picture. It's the first movie Miyazaki has directed in 10 years. The Studio Ghibli auteur came out of retirement and spent about seven years to write the original story and screenplay and produce the film.

Shinkai's "Suzume" features the adventures of a high-school girl who travels across Japan to shut magical "doors" that lead to calamity.

"The Boy and the Heron" won an additional nomination for Best Original Score for a Motion Picture. The film's music was produced by composer Hisaishi Joe.

Six movies are in contention for Best Motion Picture, Drama. They include Oppenheimer, a hit biopic about the physicist who led the development of the atomic bomb. The bombs were dropped on Japan during World War Two.

The winners of the Golden Globes will be chosen by a group of international entertainment journalists and announced on January 7.

The awards are viewed as a precursor to Hollywood's biggest showpiece, the Academy Awards.
