Chinese President Xi Jinping has rebuked Canadian leader Justin Trudeau over alleged leaks of their closed-door meeting at the G20 summit. Footage from Canadian media shows the two leaders talking on Wednesday at the summit venue on the Indonesian island of Bali. Xi told Prime Minister Trudeau through a translator, "Everything we discussed has been leaked to the papers and that is not appropriate." He also said with a smile, "If there is sincerity, we can communicate well with mutual respect, otherwise the outcome will not be easy to tell." Trudeau responded, "In Canada, we believe in a free and open and frank dialogue." He added, "We will continue to work constructively together." Xi then said, "Let's create the conditions first." He shook Trudeau's hand before walking away. Canadian media reports say the two leaders held a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, and Trudeau expressed concern about China's alleged interference in Canadian elections. It is extremely unusual for Xi's unofficial conversations to be filmed by media. China-Canada relations have been worsening since Canadian authorities arrested a senior executive of the Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies in 2018.
