UN Security Council exchanges words over missile explosion in Poland NHK

The United States and Britain have criticized Russia over the recent deadly missile explosion in Poland in the UN Security Council. Russia has argued that Ukraine's air defense fired the missile.

The Security Council held a meeting on Wednesday, following the missile explosion, which killed two people.

NATO has pointed to the possibility that the missile was a stray fired by Ukrainian forces.

Britain's UN Ambassador Barbara Woodward called the incident "a tragedy that indisputably stems from Russia's illegal and unjustified invasion."

The US envoy, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told the council that "Ukraine has every right to defend itself against this barrage."

Ukrainian and Polish UN ambassadors also took part in the meeting. They stopped short of commenting the details of the missile but showed a willingness to cooperate with investigations into the explosion.

Russia's UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, argued that "it had been Ukrainian air-defense missiles that hit the territory of Poland."

He said the accusation that Russia fired the missile was not just another piece of disinformation, but a conscious attempt to drag NATO into a direct confrontation with Russia.
