Mobile carriers providing free Wi-Fi in quake-hit areas NHK

Major Japanese mobile phone carriers are offering free Wi-Fi service in areas hit by Monday's earthquake.

NTT Docomo, KDDI and Softbank say they are launching "00000JAPAN," a public wireless internet service, in Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama and Fukui prefectures.

The service is designed to utilize Wi-Fi hotspots that are usually provided at train stations, restaurants and hotels. The hotspots may not be operable if these venues are out of power.

The companies are calling on the public to avoid entering credit card information or passwords, as security measures, including encryption, have not been taken.
