US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday said the Trump administration might strike its first trade deal "as early as this week or next week." The administration of President Donald Trump has been engaged in tariff negotiations with US trading partners in a bid to reduce the country's trade deficit. Bessent didn't tell reporters which country he thinks will become the first to sign a deal with the US. Bessent, however, did say that Vice President JD Vance "was in India last week, and negotiations are coming along quite well with them." He also said, "some of our Asian trading partners have come with very, very good deals." Bessent stressed that Trump would have "the final say on all of them." Japan will send its top negotiator, Akazawa Ryosei, to the US for a second round of tariff negotiations. He is scheduled to meet with Bessent in Washington as early as Thursday.
