The United Nations refugee agency has warned that more than 800,000 people could flee Sudan as fighting drags on between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. An official from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said on Monday that some 73,000 people had already evacuated to seven countries, including neighboring Chad, Egypt and South Sudan. The official went on to say the number could rise to 815,000 if the crisis is not resolved immediately. Sudan's health ministry said at least 528 people have been killed since the violence erupted in the African country on April 15. The two sides announced they agreed to extend a ceasefire for a further 72 hours from Monday. But local media reports say gunshots and shelling have been heard intermittently in and around the capital Khartoum. Fears are growing that a mass exodus of evacuees will further worsen the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and surrounding nations.
