Japan's top government spokesperson has offered his condolences to the families of those who were killed in the Halloween crowd crush in Seoul, and called for steps to prevent similar accidents in Japan. Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu expressed his sympathy at a news conference on Monday. The accident in Seoul's Itaewon district on Saturday left at least 154 people dead, including two Japanese women. Matsuno said the Japanese government continues to collect information from local authorities in Seoul, but has so far confirmed no other Japanese casualties. He said the government will provide the maximum possible support to the families of the two women in view of the protection of Japanese nationals. Matsuno then turned to steps to ensure safety when large turnouts are expected for Monday's Halloween celebrations in Japan. He said the National Police Agency has instructed police departments nationwide to step up traffic control and other measures to prevent accidents involving crowds in coordination with local governments, among others.
