Thousands of fireworks lit up the sky in the northern Japanese city of Daisen on Saturday.
Twenty-eight pyrotechnic firms from across the country took part in the 97th Omagari Fireworks competition. The event was held on the banks of the Omono River in Akita Prefecture.
The contest was divided in two categories. The daytime section showcased colorful smoke fireworks visible in the sunlight, while the nighttime section showcased the beauty of traditional round fireworks and creative displays set to music.
In the main event based on the theme of "peace," around 2,200 fireworks were set off over the course of five minutes to the symphonic poem "Finlandia," which was composed over 120 years ago and supported the Finnish independence movement.
About 100,000 spectators enjoyed a total of 18,000 fireworks.
A woman in her 20s from Miyazaki Prefecture said it was nice to see the Omagari fireworks again after a long time. She added she was moved by the fireworks, which came in so many different colors and types.
A 9-year-old boy from Daisen said the round fireworks and the rainbow-colored ones were beautiful.
