Japanese weather officials say snow is falling in mountainous areas of the Kanto-Koshin region. They say snow may accumulate even on the plains through Sunday.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says a low-pressure system with a front is moving east along the southern coast of the main island of Honshu, and there is another low-pressure system near the Izu Islands.
The agency says these conditions are bringing rain to wide regions along the Pacific coast in eastern Japan, and snow to mountainous areas.
In the 24 hours through Monday morning, up to 8 centimeters of snow is likely in the Koshin region and from Hakone to the Tama and Chichibu areas. As much as 3 centimeters could fall on the southern Kanto plains, including central Tokyo. Northern Kanto is forecast to have 2 centimeters in both mountainous and level areas.
Weather officials are calling on people to watch out for traffic disruptions that may be caused by snow accumulation and icy roads. They are also asking people to be aware of the risk of power outages as snow falls on power lines.
