Japan's Foreign Ministry has lodged a protest with South Korea's embassy in Tokyo over a recent drill by the South Korean military in waters near the Takeshima Islands, which are claimed by Japan. The director-general of the ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, Namazu Hiroyuki, told senior South Korean Embassy diplomat Kim Jang-hyun on Friday that the drill was extremely regrettable. Namazu told Kim that the Takeshima Islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. He said the South Korean military's exercise is totally unacceptable. South Korea controls the islands. Japan claims them. The Japanese government maintains the islands in the Sea of Japan are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says South Korea is illegally occupying them.
