M6.9 quake hits off Papua New Guinea, tsunami threat largely passed NHK

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake has struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says the threat of tsunami has now largely passed.



The US Geological Survey says the quake occurred at 20:04 UTC on Friday, or about 6 a.m. Saturday local time.



Earlier, the center said a tsunami of one to three meters could reach parts of Papua New Guinea's coast.
