Tokyo's Yamanote Line train services to be reduced this weekend NHK

Train services on part of the outer loop of Tokyo's Yamanote Line will be suspended on Saturday and Sunday due to renovation work at Shibuya Station.

Operator East Japan Railway Company has been renovating the station since 2015 amid a redevelopment project. This time, in the fourth of the five-stage renovation, the track for the outer circle of the line will be rerouted and current platforms for the outer and inner loops will be consolidated into one.

All of about 540 trains on the outer circle will be suspended from Osaki to Ikebukuro stations via Shibuya from Saturday's first train run through Sunday's last.

During daytime on the weekend, the number of trains operating on the outer loop from Ikebukuro to Osaki stations via Tokyo will be reduced by 60 to 70 percent. The number of trains operating on the inner circle from Ikebukuro to Osaki stations via Shibuya will also be reduced by about 30 percent.

The railway company estimates that 530,000 people will be affected.

It plans to boost the number of trains on the Saikyo Line, which runs along the Yamanote Line in the affected section. The company is also asking passengers to use alternative railway links.

The company opened a special phone number and a website over the matter.

The phone number is 050-2016-1620, and the website is https://www.jreast.co.jp/shibuya-koji/.
