Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio plans to call for stronger coordination with NATO during the alliance's summit at a time when Russia has developed closer ties with China amid its invasion of Ukraine. Kishida has arrived in Lithuania, the second stop of his European tour, where he will attend the NATO summit on Wednesday. His first destination was Poland. He and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki confirmed their continued coordination in addressing the situation in Ukraine. Kishida is expected to pledge Japan's proactive support to Ukraine, based on its achievements at the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima. Kishida plans to call for closer ties between Japan and NATO, based on the belief that the security of Europe and that of the Indo-Pacific region are inseparable. The prime minister is also scheduled to meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. They are expected to issue a document that presents details of how Japan and the alliance will cooperate. Arrangements are also underway for Kishida to have separate meetings with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
