Humanitarian aid workers are calling for more international help for survivors of a series of powerful earthquakes in western Afghanistan. The governing Taliban say the death toll from two magnitude-6.3 quakes on Saturday has risen to 2,053. International organizations have begun sending supplies to affected regions. UN children's agency UNICEF has sent clothes and sanitary products. The World Food Programme says it distributed food to 700 households. Pakistan announced on Sunday that it is ready to provide food and medicine and dispatch rescue teams. A spokesperson of the Afghan Red Crescent Society told NHK that survivors are facing shortages of food and medical supplies. The spokesperson said supplies distributed so far won't be enough for people to survive the region's harsh winter.
